Readings in the Reformed Diaconate

The Reformed churches have always held the office of deacon as essential to the church’s life. Following the pattern of Acts 6, our churches have sought to find “men of good repute, full of the Spirit and of wisdom” to serve the physical needs of the church so our elders can devote themselves to “to prayer and to the ministry of the word.” Despite the priority we place on this office, I have found relatively little has been written specifically on the office of deacon....

Some Arguments for the Use of Uninspired Hymnody

There are five articles written in response to exclusive psalmody that I have found particularly helpful: one (in two parts) by Dr. Vern Poythress of Westminster Seminary, two by Dr. T. David Gordon of Grove City College and ordained in the PCA, one by Scott Sanborn of Northwest Theological Seminary, and one by Lee Irons who is a PCA minister in California. Two themes are present in both of these articles that make them particularly valuable....

Jesus' View of the Old Testament

I prepared these notes for a study with a friend in 2011. These notes are based on “Our Lord’s View of the Old Testament” by J. W. Wenham. Lesson on Psalm 103

The following is a lesson I taught on Psalm 103 at Wears Valley Ranch in 2009. How great is God’s love for His people? As Christians, we should be overwhelmed with the goodness of God’s love toward us. The great story of the Bible, the great news it reveals to us is that while we are dead in our sins God has forgiven us in Christ. While we were dead in our sin, while we were dwelling in darkness, while we were lost in the ignorance of our sinful hearts—God called us out of darkness into His marvelous light....

Lesson on Numbers 21

The following is a lesson I taught at Wears Valley Ranch in 2008. Think about being in a place where you are totally helpless and will not live unless someone or something saves you. What would you hope to happen in that situation? Say you were drowning in the ocean; would you want someone to throw a rock to save you? Would you count on another drowning person to rescue you?...
